The world has not gotten better because we're all able to buy more cheap stuff.

Cheap stuff increasingly pollutes the planet; it hasn't eliminated poverty; and it replaces living-wage jobs in rich countries with Dickensian ones elsewhere.

But the most pernicious effect is that we no longer have any HUMAN connection with our goods. Everything is now produced by nameless, faceless automatons thousands of miles away.

We have a name for this: We call it Progress.

Here's a letter I sent to the NY Times today:

"Americans who oppose the banning of burqas and niqabs in France generally overlook that other societies do not regard freedom of expression as an unquestioned unlimited right. Other countries tend to associate certain freedoms with responsibility. We vilify China, for example, for controlling their internet. But have we personally endured the chaos of the Cultural Revolution? When loved ones have been tortured or murdered in social upheaval, you probably end up having a different "take" on freedom of expression.

Much of France seems to be saying that certain symbols cross an invisible line and are too hot to handle. In America, we would do well to ponder this for the well-being of our own society."

I am interested in death ... not in the morbid way.

Ancient wisdom traditions say that death is a sacred process, a sacred event.

I say it's not to be missed. (But I hope it remains a long way off.)

I'm planning (and hoping) not to be medicated into a stupor when I go, and I'm trying to live my life in such a manner that this won't happen.
